About Fleet Complete

Fleet Complete is a leader in fleet management, asset, and workforce management IoT solutions, managing globally over 500,000 mobile sites and over 30,000 businesses, with AT&T in the US, Telus Canada, Telstra Australia and T-Mobile Europe as key partners. Fleet Complete continues to be one of the fastest-growing companies in North America, having won numerous innovation and growth awards.

Problem: private cloud was becoming an operational risk

Fleet Complete services for Eastern Europe serving 100,000+ connected IoT units were hosted in a private cloud. The datacenter was close to reaching capacity limits and there was a risk for overload related incidents. Although Fleet Complete had standardised application deployments with Kubernetes, there were only a few people who were able to manage and make changes to the private cloud infrastructure. Fleet Complete was looking to mitigate the infrastructure scalability and human resources related risks.

Solution: migrate to and standardize on AWS

Fleet Complete has chosen AWS as a preferred cloud provider. Fleet Complete started working with Entigo to develop a reusable cloud infrastructure blueprint for hosting Fleet Complete regional services. This blueprint is implemented using Infrastructure as Code principles and AWS managed services and was used as a base for Eastern Europe private cloud to AWS migration. Entigo worked with Fleet Complete to plan, prepare and execute the cloud migration project.

AWS services used in this project:

  • Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS)
  • Elastic Container Registry (ECR)
  • RDS for PostgreSQL
  • Managed Streaming Kafka
  • EC2
  • S3
  • Elastic File System (EFS)
  • Direct Connect
  • Transit GW
  • Site-to-Site VPN
  • Client VPN
  • AWS Cognito
  • AWS CodeBuild
  • AWS CodePipeline

Result

In total, close to 100 applications and 70TiB of data was migrated from the private cloud to AWS with minimal impact to the end customers.

By utilizing the same infrastructure blueprint as in other regions, less effort is needed to achieve good levels of expertise amongst employees in operating all the hosting platforms bringing along an overall increase in service quality. AWS has enabled the team to eliminate infrastructure overload related incidents and reduce key employee-related risks.

Standardization on AWS, automation for infrastructure provisioning and management and AWS managed services has enabled FC to relocate resources previously spent on cloud operations to product development.
